No one’s ever told Eleanor that life should be better than fine.

SYNOPSIS:

Meet Eleanor Oliphant: She struggles with appropriate social skills and tends to say exactly what she’s thinking. Nothing is missing in her carefully timetabled life of avoiding social interactions, where weekends are punctuated by frozen pizza, vodka, and phone chats with Mummy.

But everything changes when Eleanor meets Raymond, the bumbling and deeply unhygienic IT guy from her office. When she and Raymond together save Sammy, an elderly gentleman who has fallen on the sidewalk, the three become the kinds of friends who rescue one another from the lives of isolation they have each been living. Ultimately, it is Raymond’s big heart that will ultimately help Eleanor find the way to repair her own profoundly damaged one.

T H O U G H T S…

Eleanor! Oh, Eleanor! Ang babaeng hindi alam kung ano ang zumba. Akala nia tao yun! (The woman who don’t know what Zumba is! She thought it’s a person) Who is Zumba?? 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣 but this book…*sigh.

It’s Gail Honeyman’s writing debut and wow! It’s a wonderful piece and I’m proud to have read her first work and will definitely pick up her titles in the future. She laid out the story carefully and you’ll enjoy how each the characters leaves an impact to Eleanor.

This is yet, another one of my best reads for 2018. Highly recommended!

ELEANOR OLIPHANT

Her life was routinary – work then home then eats the same food on the same days. She’s always regarded as “weird” but she’s indifferent for a lot of reasons. She was raised by a violent & hugely problematic mom and growing up in that kind of environment was her “normal.”Then, her first ever romantic relationship was not really romantic at all! She’s physically & verbally abused and taken advantage. But she never mentions it to anyone because she had no one. No friends, no family. Besides, it’s none of their business, really – that’s how she sees it.

She’s 30 & considered a millennial but she has no idea what’s going on with the Pop culture! She’s always so prim & proper but she’s no princess; as you read on, you’ll think that she’s raised in some sort of a palace. And her vocabulary! Ay sus! It was my first time to encounter words like comeuppance, anathema or twiddle dee (this, I’ve read from a very old song)  That or my vocabulary is very limited! 😬

RAYMOND GIBBONS

He’s the I.T. guy from Eleanor’s workplace and it’s funny how she describes him. And if I were to describe him, he’s dugyot with a good heart. Pero wag ka! Kahit dougie (short for dugyot) yan, he still caught the attention of a hottie, in the person of Laura. Iba rin!

But on a serious note, Raymond is kind. He has a warm personality, a bit of a chain smoker but, a good person underneath the gaudy style. Eleanor may have had a relationship with a man, but she never really felt loved. But Raymond, he brought sunshine & warmth to her life.

JOHNNIE LOMOND a.k.a The Rockstar

what an arse! Literally!  You’ll find out why when you read the book! 🤣

In my opinion, Eleanor liked the rockstar but it’s nothing more than a physical admiration; a crush on a famous person.

I think this is the first book where I felt really sad for the lead character. I felt the sadness on every page of the chapter called BAD DAYS. Her and her unwanted solitary.

This book touched important subjects that we have in our society today like mental illness, depression & alcoholic tendencies; it illustrated how a depressed person is not even aware that she/he has a problem.

Again, it’s a beautiful book. It reminds us that there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel and just like what Patrickstarrr would always say, Life opens up when you do. And with these, I’m giving it 5 stars!
